Letter Writer rebukes Jammeh regime, takes issue with Echo editorial
Dear Editor,
Since Jammeh came to power, he had openly expressed his desire to work closely with Cuba at any cost including doing so at the detriment of Gambians. Well it is true that Gambia is an independent state with rights to deal with any country as long as that is in the interest of our nation. But as a security officer in the Gambia, I am aware that many of these NIA men and women including people I know very well are now in Cuba. They include the notorious killer and torturer called Demba Cessay and another disguised murderer called Bakary Jatta.

A desperate mother’s request: saving lives
Written by Jennifer Jones Austin
Hello, my name is Jennifer Jones Austin. I am a 41 year old mother of two young children. Only months ago on September 23, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Just days before I was walking around feeling fine, taking care of my family, going to the gym daily, and working professionally as an advocate for children and families living in poverty. I had no medical history of health problems. Things were good.

Misuse of our National Honours
By D. A. Jawo
Once upon a time, being the recipient of one of our prestigious National Honours such as the National Officer of the Order of the Republic of The Gambia (ORG) etc, was the wish and pride of every Gambian. However, that unfortunately is no longer the case. Why! The answer simply is that the awards have been so over-used and abused that they seem to have lost all their ecstatic value and prestige and as such, they now seem to be reserved mainly for die-hard supporters of the ruling party as well as sycophants and the regime’s praise singers, and as a result, most decent Gambians no longer want anything to do with them.

Gambia Vision 20-Never: Knowledge deficiency, erroneous policies and wrong priorities
By Mathew K Jallow, Associate Editor
They descended on Kanilai village, in royal resplendence, like invaders of another planet, but Kanilai villagers, no longer stunned by the hype, and numbed to the endless cockiness of it all, only wish the nightmare would end. It was the week Yahya Jammeh had chosen to again draw attention to his boundless power, and stultify members of our traumatized government civil service.

Echo letter writer draws parallels between Gambia and Sri Lanka
Barely three hours after our editorial captioned “Yahya Jammeh: A President, liar or terrorist”, a withering indictment of the Jammeh regime, had an erudite Professor of Law at a prestigious Law school in Maryland, sent us the letter below. We have read the article as instructed and found it very educative and hope that our readership too will find it so. However, the erudite professor wishes to remain anonymous and hopefully one day, he too will write us an editorial on human rights and the rule of law in The Gambia.

Yahya Jammeh- A President, liar or terrorist?
By Ebrima G. Sankareh, Editor-In-Chief
Barely a week after the high profile sacking of Mr. Abdoulie Sallah as Secretary General and Head of the Gambian Civil Service, the tantalizing details are now unfolding and if any persons were in doubt as to the veracity of that incident, it should now be crystal that Mr. Sallah was axed following a very poisoned atmosphere at The Gambia’s oval office. The bellicose statement from Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh published verbatim in Tuesday's Daily Observer newspaper has irksome echoes of the

Born Rebel; Born Gainako: The Life, Times and Journeys of an African Radical.
An Autobiography
By Mathew K Jallow, Author**
I am the child of a random encounter. I am the product of a chance meeting, between a young attractive Tamaru drummer, and a beautiful divorcee, who carried herself with uncommon grace and stealth. But, I did not know it yet. Not until I became a teenager beginning to make sense of the world around me. In the quite life of a villager deep in the hinterland of The Gambia, I did not seek to find questions with which to turn the world on its head. The

Deyda's last Supper
--Reflections on last moments of slain Gambian journalist
By Yusupha Cham
It is not without good reason that Jesus’ “Last Supper” with his disciples has been made the subject of so many artistic projects over the centuries; here, at one of the last gatherings attended by all, Jesus delivered instructions not on how to enjoy the meal, but how to remember him once he is gone.

A Muslim speaks out against Terrorism
By Ousman A. Bah, Castro Valley, CA
I am writing these thoughts as a devout Muslim, born in The Gambia, West Africa, a naturalized American citizen and a student of the Koran for many years. One of most disturbing aspects of the recent terrorist attempt to destroy the Northwest Airlines flight on December 25, 2009, is not only the perverted understanding of our Muslim faith that the act represents, but also the unexplainable silence of

New Year Message to the Gambia armed forces
By Yusupha Cham
The year is slowly but surely edging to an end. With it so many failed hopes, barely realized hopes and unaccomplished dreams fade way. There is no such country where this situation is so realistic than it is in The Gambia, all because of a failed and devious political system being shoved into the throat of the masses.

Dr Fox says...
“Extreme justice is an extreme injury: for we ought not to approve of those terrible laws that make the smallest offences capital, nor of that opinion of the Stoics that makes all crimes equal; as if there were no difference to be made between the killing (of) a man and the taking (of) his purse, between which, if we examine things impartially, there is no likeness nor proportion .” ~— Sir Thomas More in Utopia, Bk 1.
