Cpt. Famara Jammeh Dies In Nepal Crash

Following numerous e-mails enquiring the true identity of the Gambian arms monitor who died in the Nepali helicopter crash, we can now confirm that the victim is Captain Famara Jammeh of the Gambian Armed Forces. He was part of a United Nations arm monitor team in the Nepalese capital of Katmandu. The helicopter crashed on Monday killing up to ten people. Details remains sketchy but our military sources have promised to furnish us with more information about the late Captain Jammeh.

Officials examine the bodies and the crash site at a hill in Ramechhap, Kathmandu, March 4, 2008. Four United Nations arms monitors were among at least 10 people killed in Monday's helicopter crash in Nepal, officials said on Tuesday.

Update On the Late Cpt. Famara Jammeh

According to our military Affairs sources, the late Captain Famara Jammeh, about 34, was from Gunjur in the Western Division. A graduate of Nusrat High School, Jammeh enlisted as a Cadet Officer in the 1996 Gambia National Army Training School at Bakau Depot. After his graduation, he was sent for overseas training. From January-June 1997 Jammeh attended the School of Armour & Mechanised Warfare in Nowshera, North West Frontier Force in Pakistan.

Upon Jammeh’s successful graduation, he returned home as a Lieutenant posted under the One Infantry Battalion, Yundum Barracks as Platoon Commander. In 2003 he was selected for Peacekeeping Mission in an unspecified African country and was away for a Year. In April 2004, he was moved to State House as Platoon Commander.

In March 2006 following the alleged foiled coup by fugitive Army Chief Colonel Ndure Cham, Captain Famara Jammeh was among numerous officers arrested. He was detained under what our sources described as gruelling conditions but was lucky to see the light of day after a few weeks. Once released, Jammeh was moved from State House and posted to Armed Forces Hqs. in Banjul albeit under strict surveillance. He is a graduate of Jagi College, Kaduna state in Northern Nigeria. A brother–in-law to the late Musa Malia Mungu Jammeh, Captain Famara Jammeh was married.
