Yahya Jammeh's Horrible Legacy: Murders, Tortures, Disappearances

Yahya Jammeh’s Horrible Legacy

Murders, Tortures, Disappearances

and Imprisonment

By Mathew K Jallow, Associate Editor

Ousman Sonko, Abdoulie Kujabie and Yahya Jammeh-Gambia's Triplets of Evil

In fourteen years, The Gambia has been transformed from a peaceful haven for political and economic migrants from the rest of West Africa, to a country that is unrecognizable to the vast majority of its citizens. In July 1994, when the military seized power, no one expected our country to be awash with the blood of its citizens. Yahya Jammeh’s regime has at every level exemplified the terrible human rights records that Africa is renowned for, and the record proves it. What other proof do Gambians need to convince them that Yahya Jammeh is a psychopathic murderer? If this does not change their minds, then they can be characterized as animals devoid of humane feelings.

Below is an incomplete list of Gambians who have been murdered, disappeared, tortured, or languishing in Yahya Jammeh’s prison system. The prison system in The Gambia has the notoriety as being inarguably the worst in Africa. Prisoners are left to die of hunger, lack of adequate medical care and dirty, horrible, unhygienic living conditions. Again the list is by no means complete, and we would like to have it complete, as a result we are appreciative of any additional names from the general public. Our hope is that the public will help us update this list and make it as accurate as possible. The list will be update and publish every three months and all new additional persons jailed, imprisoned, disappeared, tortured, arrested and detained without cause or murdered, will be highlighted in red. The Gambia Echo is determined that our countrymen, governments, organizations and people around the world will never forget what is happening in The Gambia. This list and all pertinent information will be shared with national and international organizations and agencies around the world.
