Elizabeth Yamide Renner elected Speaker of Gambian National Assembly
Predictably, Mrs. Elizabeth Y.K. Renner, a career schoolteacher and vice Chairperson of the Ombudsman, was unanimously elected by ruling APRC party representatives, Wednesday evening as the new Speaker of the Gambian National Assembly.
President Yahya Jammeh recently nominated Mrs. Renner after revoking the nomination of the former Speaker, Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay.
The newly appointed Chief Justice, Mr. Eummauel Agim conducted the election. Mrs. Renner was nominated by the Majority Leader of the National Assembly, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta of the ruling APRC and was seconded by the Member for Foni Berefet, Hon. Bintandin Jarju. The opposition members of the House opposed her election. After her election, she took the oath of office and swore to “execute (my) function and to the duty of a Speaker and to the National Assembly without fair or favour, …according to the Constitution of The Republic of The Gambia.”
In her brief statement, she said as Speaker, she will work in the interest of The Gambia and also commended President Jammeh for his commitment to gender equality.
