The Gambia Echo Newspaper Blocked in The Gambia

The Cowardly Jammeh Regime blocks Gambia Echo Newspaper in The Gambia

The Echo Management

Reliable sources in Banjul, The Gambia, have expressed concern and outrage over the blockage of The Gambia Echo since last week. This censureship move effectively denies Gambians free access to information contrary to our laws and our Constitutional statutes. The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and other free media advocate institutions and governments around the world are being informed of the Jammeh regime's callous move to deprive Gambians of the information they need to make informed decisions in matters that affect their daily lives.

Dillusional Jammeh "performing miracles?"

It could be recalled that The Gambia Echo and other online Gambian media reacted harshly to Justice Minister Edward Gomez's irresponsible denial of human rights abuses in The Gambia. It is believed that the regime's decision and subsequent move to block The Gambia Echo was a result of The Echo's reaction to Edward Gomez's lies at the African NGOs forum held in Banjul two weeks ago. Infact new information from The Gambia indicates that the blockage of The Echo followed soon after The Echo's reaction to Edward Gomez's lies and the release of Bakary Gassama after two years detention in Mile 2 Prisons without the benefit of due process. Mr. Gassama is the only one released out of 20 missing Gambians, most of whom have gone missing for more than five years. The Gambia Echo's management encourages readers in The Gambia who have found a way to beat the blockage to pass on their knowlegde so more Gambians can access the news and information from The Gambia Echo. We hope the cowardly Jammeh regime will come to its senses and cease the constant meddling with the free flow of information from Gambia's diverse overseas media houses. The access to information is a human right, and not a privilage that any government can take away at their own volution. The Gambia Echo encourages other Gambian media houses at home and abroad, and freedom loving Gambians to join us in condemning the totalitarian aggression and act of information repression perpetrated by the cowardly Jammeh regime.
