Dear All Writers, Aspiring Writers and Readers!!

With your permission I will open your day with a near-cliché: We have never had it so good! As a writer or a keen supporter of the writing arts you are of course pleased to know that we now have a working organisation and the requisite energy, goodwill and capacity to make a difference in promoting the literary arts in The Gambia.

WAG (Writers’ Association of The Gambia) is now launched after nearly a year of tough preparation and getting over sometimes heartbreaking episodes. But it is already poised with major projects such as (a) the publication of a ready anthology by Gambian poets, (b) setting up of permanent headquarters, (c) taking part in international forums and (d) making Gambian writing better known through increased contacts with the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) and other leads that will put our creative artists on the world map. But we cannot achieve or continue that work without a strong Executive Committee as well as a visible and committed Membership. That is why you are receiving this campaign message from me the Interim Vice President to remind you of two important matters on the burner:

1.      WAG Elections for the Executive Committee takes place on Saturday July 31, 2010 at 4 pm at the UTG Law Faculty MDI Road;

2.      YOU NEED TO BE A PAID-UP MEMBER TO VOTE AND TO RUN FOR OFFICE.

This appeal is for each of you to PAY your dues and VOTE to move this great association forward. It is easy: call our Interim Treasurer Mrs. Ramatoulie Othman (937-1765) or our Interim General Secretary Mr. Cherno Omar Barry (790-4617) and quickly settle your membership dues so that WAG will put in office men and women who will guide its affairs over the next two years.

It’s only a few days until July 31st but a determined phone call to the Association will guarantee that a proper Executive Committee is elected. The current start-up status of an interim responsibility must change to authorise a constitutional Executive Committee to carry on the work.

Without YOU, WAG is only a name; with YOU, it comes alive and moves the writing, publishing and marketing of The Gambia’s creative talent. We cannot do it without your ideas.

We will hear from you before July 31st and at the election meeting. We have come too far now to flag!

Yours faithfully,

Nana Grey-Johnson

Interim Vice President.

Dr Fox says...

Extreme justice is an extreme injury: for we ought not to approve of those terrible laws that make the smallest offences capital, nor of that opinion of the Stoics that makes all crimes equal; as if there were no difference to be made between the killing (of) a man and the taking (of) his purse, between which, if we examine things impartially, there is no likeness nor proportion .~ Sir Thomas More in Utopia, Bk 1. (1516)
