Gambians, Especially Those In Foni Should Wake Up

I just glanced at the list of our newly elected Members of the National Assembly (NAMs) and something aches my heart. I also browsed at Associate Editor Mathew K. Jallow's analysis to see the proportion of the population that participated in the election. As Jallow rightly puts it, the low election turnout is an indication of the majority's rejection of Jammeh's regime. If less than 40% of the population should vote in the Presidential and Parlimentary elections, then logic should tell Jammeh that he should leave now. He is unwanted in that seat. He should pack and go home to where he came from. This is a civilized protest vote from the people. That is the beginning of presenting CARTE ROUGE for him to quit in peace before he is sent in pieces. Unfortunately the guy has a thick brain that does not give him sense to see the signals. He doesn't have the capacity to really analyse the situation; instead he is throwing a party in the beach to celebrate a victory of the minority. To directly translate the Mandinka saying: "my body die for him". Give the fool a rope and he will hang himself. The man doesn't realize that those dancing for him now once danced for President Jawara. They had once taken unimaginable oaths to stand by Jawara to the last minute. But what happened when he, Yayha and his cohort bandits ransacked the State House on the fateful Friday morning of 22 July 1994? None of them open a window to know what was going on. But we still remembered when some of them rallied at MacCarthy Square appealing to President Jawara to stay on for life and made all swearings and pledged allegiaances to stand by the man. They behaved that day like the Christian marital oath "Until Death Shall Part Us". Did they wait for death to part President Jawara with them? Not at all. Even those MPs who equated Jawara to the Prophets never waited. Within the twinkle of an eye they switched their alligiances. They were among the first group to endorse Jammeh's takeover in 1994. Today, they are dancing for Jammeh. They are not dancing in sincerity and patriotism but dancing with mouths widely open for any scrumbs that can drop in. They are only giving the fool the ropes to hang himself more and more. No sooner he is kicked out than the same people will turn against him with worst criticisms. Yahya should watch out. What goes around, comes around. The idiot sees himself as a powerful dictator who is invincible but it is a sad mistake he is ignoring. History is a good teacher who never fails. The last scenes of Samuel Doe's life should restrain Yahya from some of the atrocities he is doing now. God loves all of us and He never betrays anyone until you betray him; then He teaches you a lesson that you'll never forget even if you are in Hell. Human blood is too precious to be wasted in that manner and the idiot and his gang of thugs should know that.

Perhaps the most unfortunate Gambians, may be due to political  ignorance or lack of exposure may be  the Fonyikas. Some of them are so unfortunate that their own son has turned them into slaves, working for him in his Kanila Farm. Almost all abled bodied people in Foni are in Kanila working for the small boy that they saw growing up in their midst. They have abandoned their homes  and farms enmasse and all what they have to do, only to live in Kanila. Young ladies are just there for Yahya's soldiers and gang of thugs. Some of them are married women with their families who leave their households for weeks if not months to serve the Monster and his thugs. This is mental colonisation!!! The British had gone and gave us independence but Yahya has restored slavery and colonisation of his own people!!! Young and old, men and women, boys and girls, married and unmarried all parked in Kanila. Doing what? Please think of the answer. No doubt that the National AIDS Secretariat's Sentinental Surveillance Survey Reports for HIV/AIDS have indicated that Sibanor Catchment Area, which covers the whole of Foni has the highest HIV infections. It is not politics. It is not gimmicks. It is a fact; a scientific valid fact from a scientifically conducted survey!!!. If you don't believe it prove me wrong.

So you see how my dear region is abused and exposed to vulnerability of that magnitude by a child born and brought in the same area. He has changed Foni in  brothel. It is not correct. It is slavery at its worst form. I know some Fonyikas do not want their women to go to Kanila because of what is happening there but they cannot protest for fear of being branded by his clan people as"Anti-Jola Regime". They have to accept and live with that agony throughout their lives as married couples. Imagine your wife leaving you to stay with those rude and reckless soldiers for weeks. What type of marriage is that? In fact, some men protest against the act, Yahya always threaten to lock them up or encourage women to divorce and he will get them other husbands. This is the bigot's theory of women empowerment. Today, Foni is one of the poorest regions in The Gambia simply because all their lands have been seized by the monster and turned into gardens and orchards in which they are forced to work without pay a classical case of double jeopardy. Imagine Yahya has seized their wives and daughters and feed them to his soldiers; he has seized their lands and make them work on those gardens. So what do they have as people? What is the pride of supporting the monster up to the point of presenting unopposed candidates for Parliamentary elections? Is this not a lethal combination of folly and ignorance? Logic dictates that Foni should have been the region that should learn more lessons than others. They should have been wiser not to be misused again for the second time. During Jawara's regime, they were battered and branded as "wasters" for their elaborated expenditure for the traditional circumcision ceremonies. They witnessed the worst atrocities after the abortive coup of 1981 led by Kukoi Samba Sanyang. Then how on earth should their own son subject them to the same humiliation using a different format? Are they still sleeping? Are they not aware of the rubbish going on in their region? Can't they reason well? Look at the next game he played on the Kujabi family of Dobong. He used them against their own people and now throws them out of his side. Some, I understand, are languishing in Mile Two; Gods knows what they had done. They are wallowing in shit and shame now. Sorry for them. Now the brute cut all the facilities he had provided for the people of Dobong. They are back to zero, if not worse than before.

After all, what development is in Foni, apart from the white elephent hospital in Bwiam which is not better than the Health Centre that has been there before. Jammeh is wicked and only knows how to use the Fonyikas. There is nothing in that region. No good roads, no good schools, no good hospitals. No work except gardening and dancing in Kanila. People just live by hope and nothing else. Poverty is ravaging the region, making them more prone to the whims of the brute. So it is sheer stupidity for them to present unopposed candidates to the Parliamentary elections. By doing so, they are endorsing the rubbish Yahya is doing to them. They should let him know their problems by allowing political contests where candidates and people voice out the problems affecting them. Political campaigns are a fora for voicing out the communities' concerns and possible solutions. But if they lack those platforms, how would even the unopposed candidates seriously know their problems? Will anyone take them seriously in the manner they do politics? Not at all!! Politics has no link with tribe or region. What we all want is someone who can deliver and that is all. We should be learning lessons. There are so many lessons to be learnt in Gambian politics unless the individual is a donkey. Jawara did the same thing to the people of the provinces. He ruled the country for thirty years without establishing a university. He could not even build good feeder roads in the provinces to ease communication and transportation. The sick and pregnant women died of not illness but lack of transportation  to reach the nearest medical centre. We were all witnesses to those negligences. How then can we allow another idiot to fool us for the second time? How can the Fonyikas send rubber-stamped MPs to the NationalAssembly? What are they telling the rest of the country? How can they hold them accountable when they did not elect them? The people of Foni should wake up from their sleeping mats and stride towards progress. They are getting late in taking their national responsibilities. In the history of politics, I have never seen or heard of  such a doomed region in the world. I may be wrong but I am just disappointed with my people. Please let us not allow ourselves to be Gambia's laughing stalk. "Eh-Nyab" wake up!!!! They must be fools and joking to think that they are the most precious people in that country because of their monster child. They are actually not. They are still in the duldrum of history no matter the few propping up. They still need to work hard like any other region of the country. So it is better for them to be awake and be responsible like other citizens. What they need to know is that "the rain builds up in the Fonis and rains somewhere else; so what they recieve is just running water".

Yahya is a weird thief who steals from the national coffers and spends it somewhere but returns to his Kanila home pretending he brings the loot for the Fonyikas. It is better they read between lines and act responsibly like other citizens. They need to maintain their hard work, dignity and tolerance that they were known for. The man is a shamless idiot who does not take remorse in lying and fabricating anything to cling on to power. The longer Yahya stays the poorer they the Fonyikas become because he will continue grabbing their farms and make them work for him. Arable land is the only property poor farmers have in The Gambia and rely on for their livilihood. So seizing it for whatever purposes means cutting their only means of survival and turning them into destitutes and beggars. This is what is happening to those guys in the Foni, although the greedy monster and his cohorts are all over in the country grabbing land. The evidence speaks volumes. What has Yahya done for the Foni with all the unwavering support since 1994? Not even a good road apart from the one that branches to Kanila. In fact people use the North Bank to get to other parts of the country simply because the South Bank is ruinned beyond repair. Is it not folly? The Gambian people need to be careful with the monster. I don't know his advisers, but they seemed to be feeding him with evil strategies of divide and rule. The guy uses two political tickets. On one hand he uses his tribal ticket to win the minority tribes and others. He pretends to be the protector of their interests and well-being  against the majority who do not want a leader to come from the minority. On the other hand he has the Holy Quran to win the sympathy of the majority Muslims. He potrays himself as the defender of Islam against its enemies. This is only to tirick the Muslim community, which I know some people are aware of. He holds the Quran and surrounds himself with some hypocritical Imams (I am sorry, I don't mean to be rude) who scratch the Holy Quran to justify whatever Yahya says or does. So we Gambians should be very cautious ot this viper and take our time; if not we will end up tearing each other for nothing.

Yahya is not good for anyone, trust me. Those who know the man as  soldiers confessed that Yahya had never been associated with any of the religions. So how genuine is he with that Holy Book is a question that beats my imagination sometimes. He is all the time mourning and accusing the Mandinkas of hating him as President and at the same time instilling belief into the other ethnic groups that Maninka leadership will severely raprimand them. So he is their protector and they should do everything or anything to keep him in power. This is rubbish and rediculous and sound stupid but it is working in favour of Yahya. This is the psychological fear he instills in the minority ethnic groups. As a result, these groups are prepared to go out at any length to support Yahya. They don't mind lying to be the parents of some of the immigrants from the neighbouring states so that they get voting cards to vote in the election. Since we speak the same language with our neighbours, it is easy for immigrants to claim Gambian citiznship; especially, if they are backed by those in power. I am not anti- foreigners because I also have a foreign background. What I am against is the illegal infringements of the election process in the country. After all, after using those foreigners, what do they give them? Nothing at all !!! This is the level where our politics has gone to. It is pathetic and always I feel sorry for those who are used either through tribal  or religious links. That is why I am so concerned. I do not want chaos and we all pray there is no such thing like that. We need to join hands and peacefully change the idiot. There is no region in that country that is immuned to trouble as most Gambians naively think. Yes, at the moment some people are happy killing their fellow citizens, shooting and maiming innocent ones. The thugs and their relatives are celebrating the untimely demises of many innocent souls. But whether we know it or not, God changes tides any time He wishes. No one should allow himself or herself to be caught off guard. Thirty years ago, if one had told President Jawara that he would be chased out of his own country like a thief; he would have probably denied it. But what happened? Yahya will soon face it, whether he knows it now or not. When the tables turn he will regret why he was born in the first place.

Thank you,

Plarke M. Caneckouteh, U K.
