Ex-President Of The Gambia Press Union Praises Echo

By Demba A. Jawo, Dakar, Senegal
A Happy Anniversary

I wish to join all readers and well wishers of The Gambia Echo in wishing you and your hardworking editorial team a happy anniversary.

The advent of The Echo on the news stands is no doubt a big plus for Gambian journalism, and I have no doubt that you contributed immensely to the enlightenment of many Gambians and non-Gambians about happenings in the country and about Gambians in the Diaspora.

While there has been a proliferation of online Gambian newspapers, certainly, The Echo can be counted among the best of the lot, mainly because of your high level of maturity in the way you handle issues. The Echo is also ranked high for your professionalism and accurate news editing.

While I may not agree with everything written in the paper,  I am impressed in the way the news and opinions are handled by you. I would therefore, urge you to focus more on the bigger picture, which is The Gambia, than on personalities and other trivial issues.

While we may have different opinions and views about a lot of things, we are no doubt all united in wanting the best for our dear country. Therefore, we should all try to accommodate each other's views and opinions and avoid anything that would be seen to incite hatred and division amongst us.

Therefore, I wish the editorial team and all those involved in the paper's production, as well as your esteemed readership, a happy anniversary and more grease to your elbows.

Dr Fox says...

Extreme justice is an extreme injury: for we ought not to approve of those terrible laws that make the smallest offences capital, nor of that opinion of the Stoics that makes all crimes equal; as if there were no difference to be made between the killing (of) a man and the taking (of) his purse, between which, if we examine things impartially, there is no likeness nor proportion .~ Sir Thomas More in Utopia, Bk 1. (1516)
