Gambian journalist Omar Barrow seated with wife Mrs. Awa Sanneh-Barrow was murdered by the callous government of President Yahya Jammeh on April 10th. 2000 at the premises of The Gambia Red Cross at Kanifing, during a student demonstration that brought the monsterous regime to its knees.Barrow who was a rising star among his colleagues was also a very active member of the Gambian Red Cross and was on the scene to help the wounded students when a soldier of The Gambia National Army took his life. There is evidence aplenty that the young Barrow's acerbic journalistic pieces and radio commentaries on the regime's excesses had made him a target for political assassination and that the coward who shot him, knew exactly what he did.

Gambia Red Croos, The Door Where  Barrow Was Shot

These  little girls are both victims of Yahya Jammeh's genocidal government. The smiling girl in the pink shirt close to the coconut tree (left) is Fatou Barrow. She was barely three months old when her 24-year old father, Omar Barrow was murdered by Jammeh's government. By some tragic irony the awesome little girl to the right, is Linguerre Senghore whose mother Nian Jobe was shot in the leg in the fatal shooting of journalist Deyda Hydara.Nian and Ida Jagne were transfered to Dakar for medical treatment but Deyada died on the spot.

The Gambia Echo remains hopeful that one day, we will publish the photograph of the soldier who allegedly shot Omar Barrow. This reporter had travelled twice to Atlanta to convince a Gambian lady who knows some one who has custody of the photo taken while Jammeh's brutal beasts were on the rampage. Those who were with Barrow know who killed him but since The Gambia remains a police state, we will continue to play it safe until that day.
