Breaking News: Journalists Malik Jones & Mam Sait Ceesay At Mile II Prisons

By Pateh Kinteh, Banjul, The Gambia

Following their arrest three days ago, Malick Sam Jones, a senior producer at Gambian TV and Mam Saite Ceesay erstwhile Press Secretary at State House were today Wednesday September 11th, dragged to court by the State for allegedly passing classified information to foreign journalists.

According to the particulars of the case, which was presided over by Magistrate B.Y Camara at the Banjul Magistrate Court, the two were charged with passing information to foreign journalists considered threats to National Security. They were however granted bail at the tune of Two Hundred Thousand Dalasis (D200, 000. 00) each. However, shortly after the bail was granted, the two were whisked away by the Police and taken to the Mile Two Central Prisons.

Mr. Jones alongside Mam Saite Ceesay who was also the Editor- In- Chief of the Daily Observer Newspaper was arrested last week Friday and detained incommunicado at various police stations. If convicted, the duo might face heavy fines and or long jail sentences.

Curiously though, for the past days the allegation centered on a false lead published by the Gambian Daily Observer (President Jammeh’s own paper) to the effect that Ebrima J.T. Kujabi the current Press Secretary was relieved of his duties. To the contrary, Kujabi was reportedly abroad vacationing. It now remains to be seen where the duo are headed with the new twist of passing classified information to foreign journalists, which now boils down to a familiar pattern of Jammeh’s metastasizing paranoia-threat to National Security.
