The other day, I took the unprecedented step of attending the first day of the Second Sitting of the National Assembly in the 2006/07 Legislative Session with a friend of mine visiting from a neighboring country, and I almost died of shame with the behaviour and comportment of the “Honourable Speaker” Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay. We had to leave the place shortly after her address with my head held in shame.

We are once again in the Gamo (Ziyara) season in The Gambia where everyday, on radio and television, as well as in other media outlets, we hear or read announcements of Gamos being organised all over the country, virtually on a daily basis, and they all invite President Jammeh and anyone else the organisers think would donate some money as special guests of honour.

I agree with Mathew Jallow and Plarke M. Caneckouteh, and indeed everyone else that the arrest of Fatou Jaw Manneh by Yahya Jammeh's thugs has instead achieved a boomerang effect on the regime contrary to what they had intended it to be.

The imposition of Fatoumata Jahumpa Ceesay on the National Assembly as speaker by President Yahya Jammeh is certainly clearest indication of the type of despotic system operating in The Gambia. We were all witnesses to her total rejection in 2006 by the same National Assembly when she contested the position of Deputy Speaker. It is therefore, an insult to the calibre of our National Assembly members for that same person to be brought back to them as leader of the Legislature.
